Merchant Account Processor

It’s normal for a merchant account processor to bill some type of monthly charge when there is no transaction activity. Merchant processors call it a monthly minimum. The cost for setting up and maintaining an account adds up. For businesses just starting out the amount sometimes can be uncomfortable. You don’t have to pay the minimum plus the fees. You’re only charged whichever amount is greater. So let’s say you run a seasonal business, in the month of June you had zero transactions. You would pay the minimum agreement stated on your merchant application. In July, you did $10,000 worth of credit payments. You would not have to pay the minimum, but instead the transaction rates will be deducted. So you either pay the minimum or the discount rate, whichever cost is higher.
